Moong Dal (Payatham Paruppu) Sambar (a.k.a Idli Dosa Sambar) is easy, tasty and simple recipe that will let you lose count of the # of Idli/dosa’s you ate. This recipe is a perfect combination for any South Indian tiffin items.
INGREDIENTS:
- Moong Dal – ¼ cup
- Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
- Small Onion – 10 nos
- Carrot – 3 nos
- Tomato – 1 no
- Green chilies – 4 numbers
- Tamarind Juice – 4 – 5 tbsp
- Hing – 2 pinch
- Salt – to taste
- Oil – 3 tbsp
- Mustered Seeds – 1 tsp
- Urad dal – 1 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds – ½ tsp
- Curry leaves – few
- Coriander leaves -few
PREPARATION:
- Peel the onion skin and cut into half.
- Chop the tomato and carrot. Slit the green chilies.
- Take a pressure cooker, heat the oil and add the onions sauté until the raw smell is gone.
- Add the green chilies, tomato, carrot, turmeric powder, moong dal, salt and water. Cook for 3 whistles.
- Take a kadai heat the oil. Then, add mustered seeds. When it splutters add urad dal, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves and hing. When the dal gets golden color, pour the tamarind juice and cook until the raw smell is gone. Add 1 cup of water, then add the cooked items and let it boil for 2-3 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves.
- The consistency should be little watery than the normal sambar.
- Serve it hot with idli / dosa / upma.
Note:
- If it is too watery add 1 tbsp of besan flour and mix it with little water and pour it in the sambar.Let cook for 2 minutes.
