If you are bored of the traditional ‘Upma’ that is part of the busy lifestyle, you can try this Oats Upma which gives a variety and is also healthy for all ages.

Oats Upma


  • Oats – 1 cup
  • Water – 1-3/4 cups
  • Onion [M] – 1no
  • Tomato [M] – 1 no
  • Mixed veggie – 1 cup (chopped Carrot, beans, peas)

For Seasoning:

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Channa dal – ¼ tsp
  • Urad dal – ¼ tsp
  • Asafoetida – 2 pinches
  • Green chilies – 2 nos (finely chopped) / to taste
  • Ginger – ¼ tsp (finely chopped)
Serves – 2

Preparation Time – 15 min


  • Take a Kadai and add Oil. When the oil is hot, add Mustard seeds, Channa dal and Urad dal. After it splutters, add Green chilies, Asafoetida and Ginger.
  • Add the finely chopped Onion and fry it until golden brown. Then add chopped Tomatoes and saute it.
  • Add the vegetables, pour the water and add salt.Let the vegetables cook until tender.
  • When the vegetables are cooked, add the Oats and sauté it. Cover the kadai with the lid, let it cook for few minutes. If u need more water, add hot water.
  • Finally garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the stove/gas.
  • Serve the warm healthy and tasty Oats Upma with Pickle or Sambar and Chutney or Chips.
