Keerai Masiyal / Spinach Dal Gravy

Who doesn’t like the Popeye Show.? So does this dish. Its a great source of iron for children and contains vital nutrients.

Keerai Masiyal


  • Spinach – 1 bunch
  • Moong dal – 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Mustred seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Hing – 1/2 tsp


  • Grated Cocunut – 4 tsp
  • Green chillies – 3 – 4 nos
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp


  • Take a pressure cooker add the moong dal, turmeric powder and water. Cook for 3 whistle.
  • Take a kadai, add the cleaned and chopped spinach. Then add 1/4 cup of water. Keep smashing it during cooking. Only it becomes very soft [or] if u want grind it in fine paste using blender.
  • Grind the grated cocunut,green chillies , cumin seed with little water and make it a fine paste.
  • Then add the grind product in the cooked spinach, add salt and hing and mix well.
  • Add the mushy moong dal and stir it well.Add little water if necessary.
  • Heat the oil, add mustred seeds and wait until it splutters. Then add the urad dal,let it fry for golden color.Pour it in to the cooked spinach gravy and mix it.
  • Serve it hot with rice or as a side dish.
