A simple quickie and yet tasty recipe that is liked by all.

Tomato Rice / தக்காளி சாதம்

Ingredients:

  • Tomato [M] – 2 nos
  • Onion [M] – 1 no
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Red chili powder – ¼ tsp / to taste
  • Green chili – 1 no
  • Ginger garlic paste – ¼ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 1 ¾ to 2 cups
  • Coriander leaves – few

For Seasoning:

  • Oil and butter – 3 tbsp.
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Bay leaf – 1 no
  • Cardamom – 2 nos
  • Cinnamon stick – 1 inch
  • Cloves – 2nos
Serves – 2

Preparation Time – 20 min

Preparation:

  • Wash and Soak the rice for 10 min.
  • Take a Pressure Cooker and heat the Oil and Butter. Add the Mustard and cumin seeds. When it crackles, add the Whole Garam masala.

  • Add the chopped onion and when it turns translucent, add the Green Chili, Ginger Garlic paste. Saute it until the raw smell is gone.

  • Add the Turmeric powder, Red Chili powder and chopped Tomato. Saute it for 1 minute.

  • Add the Rice, Salt and Water. Mix it well. Close the lid. Let it cook for 2 to 3 whistles and turn off. When the pressure comes down, carefully remove the lid and add the chopped Coriander leaves and gently mix it.

  • Serve it hot with Raita, Chips/ Pappad.

Note:

  • If the cooked Rice is wet, let it rest for 10 min so the water can evaporate.
